I was born in Germany. My Mother was from Sparta and my father was from England. We moved very often because my father was in the British Army. Before the age of 21, I lived in Germany, Libya, Lebanon, England and Saudi Arabia. We visited Sparta and my Greek family every summer: I was Greek in my soul from the beginning. When I was 21, I decided to move to Greece, to Athens, then Sparta, now to Stoupa in Mani and soon to Kalamata. Since then I left Greece only once for 4 years to live in Varna, Bulgaria. But i missed Greece so much i had to come back.. What do you appreciate most about Greek life style? I love everything about the Greek lifestyle and hope it never changes. No Greek parents or relatives: how for God’s sake did you find the Mani? Well, it was actually my Mother who “discovered” the Mani but I was first in the Messinia! I was a backpacker traveller when I was 19. We came to Messinia and the last destination before I went home was Kyparissia. It was magnificently beautiful and untouched. When I came home I tell to my Mother: you just must travel to Messinia! She did so and came to Agios Nikolaos. After one night there she decided to go higher up to the mountains. And she found Milea, the secret paradise! From here we went to the village of Koroni, where we rented a house for the first 3 months in our new country. Although at this very moment we were homeless, since the end of 2015 we were the happy owners of a plot of land in Mani, in the village of Nomitsi where our house was to be built. Both Elias and I brought assignments from Sweden, Elias on 100% and I on 30% because my task was to build a business concept around the sale and rental of properties in Messinia. Our friends help us “understand” the garden, as both Elias and I are not people with “green fingers”. Tomato growing, olive picking, is this a salad or a cabbage growing over there and similar everyday problems. “Coming home” feeling grew and strengthened, even if the wonderful free view had to be limited by a fence and wall. Not because we were afraid of thieves but because the animals ate everything we grew! We paused in Nafplio happily and then drove on across the Argolid into the unknown. Gigantes plaki is a tasty dish based on giant beans, which are boiled until soft and then baked in a delicious tomato sauce until the beans absorb all their juices and caramelize. Gigantes can be eaten as a main course or as part of a meze plate. Make a big batch: the stew is better on day 2 or 3. I “tested” the stew when we had the family from Sweden at home and the dish was appreciated by both vegetarians and carnivores. Serve with feta cheese, chopped fresh basil or dill, a Greek country bread and one or two glasses of Retsina (Greek: ρετσίνα), a Greek white resinated wine, which has been made for at least 2,000 years. And while it is true that Greek is one of the most difficult European languages, believe me, it is definitely not ‘mission impossible’! For those of you who, like me and Elias, have chosen to move or stay for longer periods in Greece, it is quite important to be able to communicate with Greeks in their language. It’s not just about ‘communicating’ but also about showing respect for Greece’s history and culture. Even though I can understand and speak basic everyday Greek, I can’t say that I ‘can’ speak Greek. I tried Duolingo but after a while it became quite boring for me, perhaps because it wasn’t challenging enough? I bought some online courses but it wasn’t stimulating enough either. I think that this beautiful language must not only be ‘learned’ but also “understood”. Based on the culture and history of the language.
